
Maui’s brothers were skilled fishermen and saw his abilities as very flawed. He accidentally accomplished this by deliberately challenging his brothers. His behaviors led to the birth of Polynesia and its cultures. Some of his ploys had accidental consequences. Maui’s tactics and motives were often mischievous and deliberate. Most impressive lore was the birth of Polynesia. Some legends speak of his contributions to fishing, lifting the heavens, increasing daylight hours and possessing the secrets of fire. Variations of his legends are revered in the genealogies of Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, Tonga and others of the Polynesian Triangle. Maui was a supernatural demi-god, kupua, trickster and cultural hero. The tools improved quality of life and their perpetual existence. Other qualities were wise, playful, remorseful and pioneers of societies.Ī pioneer of society was a “culture hero” that provided civilized nations with useful implements for survival. The motives were often seen as childish, arrogant and mean.


As a result, characterized as a supernatural being and “trickster.”Ī trickster was a demi-god that found pleasure behaving outside of societal expectations deliberately deceiving other humans and mythical gods through pranks. Kupua was a demi-god that took the form of either man or elements of nature, usually an animal. Māui-a-kalana was born as a “demi-god” and “kupua.”Ī demi-god was part human being and god.

The offsprings were Māui-mua, Māui-waena, Māui-kiʻikiʻi and Māui-a-kalana. Its popularity is not only for the beautiful island paradise, but for the ancient legend of Maui, the demi-god.Īs the Hawaiian legend of Maui tells us, Maui was the youngest of four sons of Akalana, his father, and Hinakawea, his mother. Of the eight, Maui is the most popular among playful outdoor adventure seekers. Its most recognized islands are O’ahu, Kaua’i, Moloka’i, Lana’i, Maui, Hawai’i, Ni’ihau and Kaho’olawe. The Hawaiian Archipelago extends over 1500 miles.
